Sandy - The sound of the Ocean

Sandy has dragged also shells from the sea, that have trapped in them all the sounds, noises and typical notes of the hurricanes.

Hurricane Sandy is the strongest memory of my first time visiting Boston in the USA, between the end of October and November 2012. During my stay, on October 29th, Sandy grew rapidly and hit he East coast, affecting mainly the state of New York . I made a study sketch immediately after the passage of the hurricane, while still in the United States, then later, once back in Italy, I painted it on canvas.

The artwork is made with acrylic colours and it is a sort of satellite view that offers a different image of Hurricane Sandy: the East Coast of the United States "covered" by the event that, with the release of its strength, focuses its "eye” on New York City. The hurricane, as I could learn from the news, having started from the sea had dragged inland a lot of algae and shells for tens of kilometres. The shells retain and enclose inside of them, as trapped, the sounds, noises and notes typical of the sea. In this case, I imagined that inside them they also carried the sounds of the hurricane, which I brought back along the spiral vortex, almost hovering in the void towards the observer.

The work was part of those presented at my solo exhibition at Palazzo San Domenico, in September 2013, with the patronage of the City of Manfredonia and in collaboration with the 2013 International Guitar Festival.
