Saint Tropez.

“The truth is in nature, and I shall prove it.”

February 2020

This artwork represents my personal bond with the Côte d'Azur and Provence, places dear to some of the artists who have most marked my artistic career, such as Picasso and Cézanne.

The painting depicts the famous town of Saint-Tropez in a view from the hill overlooking the old town and the bay. The idea started from one my studies prepared in 2003, during my stay on the French Riviera on the occasion of the collective exhibition at the Cannes Film Festival Palace.

The roofs and facades of the houses in the foreground, reduced to an essential geometry through the prevalence of straight lines, sharp edges and a range of colours, attractively recall the villages of my land, especially those on the Gargano coast. The houses stand before the barren and sunny landscape of the coastal promontory, while the sea acts as a connective tissue for both lands.
